Blackjack tables and betting limits

We spread six-deck blackjack tables at our venue on 21 Binara Street, right in Canberra’s CBD. As the only option for playing blackjack in Canberra and the ACT region, we offer limits starting at accessible stakes for low-key visits and stepping up on other tables if you prefer higher action.

You can buy chips at the table straight from cash notes. Coins are not accepted for chip purchases. All play is in Australian dollars. Each table has its own betting range—published limits include $5 maximum bet $500, $10 maximum bet $500, $25 maximum bet $1000, and $50 maximum bet $2000 on different tables—so it is worth checking the limit sign before you sit down.

Our main gaming floor is open from 12pm through to 4am every day. That is a 16-hour playing window. It is different from some 24-hour casinos in other Australian cities, and we close for five hours daily in line with ACT regulations.

House rules

The dealer must draw on 16 or less and stand on 17 or more. For your own hand, you are required to hit totals of 11 or below, while hands of 12 or higher can be hit or stood on at your choice.

A natural blackjack—an Ace with any 10-value card as your first two cards—pays 3:2 on your initial stake. Any other winning hand receives an even-money payout at 1:1. If your hand total goes over 21, you bust immediately and the bet is lost, regardless of what the dealer finishes on.

Hand TypePayout
Blackjack (natural)3:2
Standard win1:1
Push (tie)Bet returned
BustBet lost

You may double on any two cards, and regular pairs (excluding aces) can be split to 4 hands.

Pairs side bet

At selected blackjack tables we offer an optional pairs side wager. This bet must be placed before any cards are dealt and pays 11:1 if your first two cards form a pair.

The outcome of the pairs bet does not affect the main blackjack hand. You can win the side bet and still lose your standard wager, or the other way around. It is settled as soon as the first two cards are dealt to you.

How a hand works

To begin a hand, place your main wager within the posted table limits. If you want to add a pairs bet, set it in the marked side-bet area before the dealer starts dealing.

We deal two cards to each player and two cards to the dealer. Your cards are face-up, while the dealer has one card face-up and one face-down. Decisions move around the table in a clockwise direction, with each player acting on their own hand in turn.

You compare your total with the dealer’s visible card and decide whether to hit or stand. It is important to use clear hand signals so the dealer and surveillance can follow your decision. Once all players have finished, the dealer turns over the hole card and draws according to the fixed rules, without any personal judgement.

Winning bets are paid, losing bets are collected, and then the next round is prepared. As a practical point, it is usually safer to keep each individual bet to a small piece of your overall session bankroll. That approach helps manage normal swings in results and reduces the risk of using up your funds too quickly.

Blackjack tournaments

From time to time we run blackjack tournaments with set prize pools. These events use elimination rounds or leaderboard scoring instead of the usual open-ended cash play.

To enter, you pay a buy-in fee and that amount goes into the overall prize pool. In tournament play you are competing directly with other participants, not just trying to beat the dealer on each hand, and chip stacks are carefully tracked across sessions.

It is worth remembering that tournament strategy can differ a lot from standard cash game play, because of relative chip value, table position and the pressure of possible elimination.

Strategic considerations

Using a six-deck shoe has an impact on card counting and similar techniques compared with single or double-deck games. With more cards in play, the effect of any one card leaving the shoe is smaller and count swings are flatter overall.

Our 3:2 payout on natural blackjack is a key rule and is generally more favourable than variants that pay 6:5. This single rule changes the long-term expectation of the game, so it is sensible to check you are at a 3:2 table before you sit down.

Basic strategy charts for six-deck blackjack set out the mathematically optimal choice for every player total and dealer up-card combination. Sticking closely to basic strategy is one of the most effective ways to keep the house edge as low as the current rule set allows.

When the dealer shows an Ace, you may be offered insurance. It pays 2:1 if the dealer has a natural blackjack, but it carries a higher house edge than the core game. Over time, that makes it a negative-value bet for most players, even though it sometimes wins in individual hands.

Responsible gaming

We maintain clear access to responsible gambling resources for anyone who feels their gaming behaviour is becoming difficult to manage. The ACT Gambling and Support Service operates a confidential helpline on 1800 858 858 that you can call for support.

This service is open to all ACT residents and offers counselling, information and referrals where needed. At our venue you can choose to set personal limits on both time and money spent at the tables, which is often a useful part of a more controlled approach. Taking regular breaks, especially during longer visits, helps with clear thinking and reduces mistakes that come from fatigue.

We operate under regulatory oversight in the Australian Capital Territory. Casino gaming in the ACT is regulated, with licensed venues such as Casino Canberra operating under specific legal conditions.
